Stephenson received her AB in History with another major in English and a minor in Spanish. Her young married life was spent raising her children, working and teaching school.

After her children were grown and married, Doris decided to return to college, earning a Master of Library Science from Vanderbilt University and finished the remainder of her career as a Librarian.
